Last week! CALL FOR ART: DAMNED 2016

An Exhibition of Enlightened Darkness
October 27th through 29th 2016

Within the word, it is easy to envision devils and hellfire. However, it also reflects the eternal condemnation of self and the subtle mind against itself. It may reflect the emotional trappings within the haunting ghosts of the past. Perhaps the binding tendrils of our deepest longings or deprivations.

DAMNED is an exhibition of those extraordinary artists who know that without darkness, there is no light, that beauty does reside within the repulsive and enlightenment within our darkest hours. This art may be the one true reflection of self that make us balanced within our personal damnations…or possibly it is an expressive visual therapy…or simply a sign that there is amazingly inexplicable inside without comparison.

Artists of all mediums from anywhere in the world are welcome to submit their work for DAMNED. There are no restrictions on genre or content but the more deeply personal and powerfully introspective, the better.

Submission deadline is September 13 2016

About Andy Stott-
Andy Stott made his debut for the Modern Love label in 2005 with the 'Replace EP' - a 4 track exposition of his uniquely slanted production style taking in Chi-Town and Motor City influences with an obtuse genetic code at its core. In the years since he has released over a dozen EPs and three albums, remaining loyal to his Manchester roots and sticking with Modern Love for all recordings. Refusing to settle, his output has veered from deepest Techno to broken Garage, slowed down House, hyperactive Footwork, analog Grime and wavey/pop mutations- always referencing his unique stylistic signatures: deep, complex and oddly beautiful.

2011 saw the release of two EPs 'Passed Me By' and 'We Stay Together' - companion pieces which saw a shift of sound into ever more frayed territory, slowing the tempos down for a set of tracks that grabbed the attention of many and ended up on countless year-end charts. The following year produced what is by now regarded as a landmark album 'Luxury Problems', - a record that introduced new elements; most notably the vocals of Alison Skidmore, Andy's piano teacher from back in his school days. A combination of accessible yet inherently deviant tropes and a production style which has become more individual and identifiable with the passing of time has attracted a huge amount of interest, with countless features in publications as diverse as Pitchfork, Vogue and the New York Times, as well as appearances at numerous festivals and shows including SXSW, Unsound, Mutek and PItchfork MOMA events continuing to expose his work to an ever-growing and often bewitched audience.

TONIGHT; Film Screening - Desperate Man Blues at MOCAD

Details:
Film: Desperate Man Blues
Wednesday, Aug 10
Doors open: 7, Film at 8
Admission: $5 Donation (free for members)

“Plastic Dreams,” our look into our love of vinyl continues with a film series dedicated to the vinyl enthusiast, and their obsession with the physical format. This wide-ranging collection of films aims to show us the devotion and connection many feel to the format, and inspires us to consider our instinct to romanticize nostalgic eras gone by.

The series will take place every Wednesday in August and will also incorporate short films, discussions and other events relevant to the subject matter of each week’s film.

Desperate Man Blues
Directed by Ed Gillan, Desperate Man Blues tells the story of self-proclaimed king of record collectors Joseph E. Bussard, Jr. of Frederick Maryland. Joe has amassed probably the greatest collection of 78 rpm recordings of country, blues, jazz, cajun and gospel music in the world. He has spent most of of his waking hours in pursuit of old 78s. To call it a hobby would be an insult: It’s his life.

“Check out the DVD Desperate Man Blues. Joe’s an eccentric record collector who’s preserved all sorts of magical corners of music – although he says things like ‘There are no good jazz records made after 1927.'” — Elvis Costello

“It’s nice to have a DVD of this great documentary on Joe Bussard, plus another featurette, King of All Record Collectors, and other bonus stuff. Bussard is a stone gas, grooving around his basement amidst one of the finest collections of pre-war 78s ever assembled. A few nice archival shots of Fahey, too. And the stories are hilarious.”
— Byron Coley and Thurston Moore, #4 on their Top 80 of 2006
