A View of Fashion In Detroit 2014

Last Saturday night at the Sound Board in Motor City Casino, Fashion in Detroit was held to promote style in a classy setting. Several fashion lines were presented by both local and national designers. Even a clothing line by Adam Levine of Maroon 5 was given a view. Music for the show came from a DJ, but also a local signer and hip hop artist Drew32 performed. There was also a market across from the show with local boutiques and acoustic artists.

There's more that could be written about the show but the only fair way to present the experience is with pictures I took during the fantastic event.

Music Hall Kid's Series Kicks Off / Snow Queen By PuppetART/ Sunday, October 5th/

Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts begins its Family Theatre Series of the 2014-2015 season introducing Detroit's own PuppetART: Detroit's Puppet Theater with their own musical rendition of Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale, Snow Queen, on Sunday, October 5th, 2014 at 4:00pm in the main hall.

The Snow Queen is a tale told in seven different stories and focuses on the struggles between good and evil following Gerda, and her friend Kai. The stories are as followed: About the Mirror and its Pieces, A Little Boy and A Little Girl, The Flower Garden of the Woman Who Knew Magic, The Prince and the Princess, The Little Robber Girl, The Lapp Woman and the Finn Woman, and What Happened at the Snow Queen's Palace and What Happened Afterwards. The Snow Queen is one of H.C. Andersen's longest but, highly renowned stories. The story of the Snow Queen has been adapted and inspired in many forms and was recently the inspired story of the Walt Disney Animation Studios' film, Frozen.

PuppetART's rendition of the Snow Queen is their largest production of the year and an original of their own retold in a musical. The story takes a hometown spin of the classic fairytale of the two friends, Gerda and Kai. It tells the tale of the two friend's experiences of good and evil as Gerda sets off to rescue Kai from the Snow Queen.

PuppetART was formed by a group of puppeteers and artists that were all trained in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia.

—After being dark for the summer to accommodate needed mechanical upgrades, the Detroit Film Theatre (DFT) reopens the weekend of Oct. 10. The fall season opens with Jonathan Demme's A Master Builder, an adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's play about a manipulative architect whose past returns to haunt him as his health begins to falter. Other highlights this season include: "Alec Guinness 100," a selection of films celebrating the 100th birthday anniversary of the comic master; Through A Lens Darkly, a documentary that explores the role of photography in shaping the identity, aspirations and social emergence of African Americans from slavery to the present; 20,000 Days on Earth, an intimate look at the Australian rock icon Nick Cave; and a film series called "Martin Scorsese Presents: Masterpieces of Polish Cinema," featuring movies made from 1957 to 1987 by some of Poland's most celebrated filmmakers.

Filmgoers will also be interested in the Nov. 6 discussion "VLOGZILLA: The Art of the Vlog," during which award-winning L.A. filmmaker and Michigan native Zeke Anders explores the rise in the global social media trend the vlog, or video-log.

The result reveals disturbing truths about the history of race relations as well as the ability of artists and amateurs alike to assert their identity through photography. Tickets are $8.50 and $6.50 for DIA members, seniors and students.

Curated by Scorsese, the series features works from Poland's most celebrated filmmakers, spanning the period from 1957 to 1987. Each film is a digital restoration with newly translated English subtitles. Additional films in the series will be screened at the DFT in 2015. Tickets for films in this series are $8.50 and $6.50 for DIA members, seniors and students.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema: Black Cross (Poland/1960—directed by Aleksander Ford)

Thursday, Nov. 27, 7 p.m.

Poland's first historical blockbuster, and the single most-viewed Polish film of all time, Black Cross is a spectacular tale of political maneuvering and tragic love set in a period of medieval warfare, depicting the Polish campaign against the invading Teutonic Knights.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema : Man of Iron (Poland/1981—directed by Andrzej Wajda)

Friday, Nov. 28, 7 p.m.

Wajda's Oscar®-nominated masterwork follows the shipyard workers' strike in Gdansk in 1980 that led to the formation of the Solidarity trade union. Filmed quickly on location immediately following the events it depicts, Man of Iron features future Polish President Lech Walesa, portraying himself.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema: A Short Film About Killing (Poland/1987—directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski)

Friday, Nov. 28, 10 p.m.

One somber March day, the paths of three men cross: the cabbie Marian cleans his car, the lawyer Piotr celebrates passing the bar exam, and 20-year-old Jacek readies his murder weapon. A sensation at the Cannes Film Festival and winner of awards the world over, this film launched the career of the brilliant Kieslowski, whose Decalogue and Three Colors Trilogy would go on to rewrite movie history.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema: Ashes and Diamonds (Poland/1958—directed by Andrzej Wajda)

Saturday, Nov. 29, 2 p.m.

A young Polish resistance soldier at the end of World War II reaches a painful crossroad when the brutal rule of the Nazis is replaced by a communist regime that does not represent the independence he has been fighting for. Set on the last day of World War II and the first day of peace, this heartbreaking film depicts how, on a single night, an entire generation's tragic dilemma becomes suddenly palpable.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema: The Constant Factor (Poland/1980—directed by Krzysztof Zanussi)

Saturday, Nov. 28, 4:30 p.m.

This psychologically astute film is the story of a man who dreams of climbing the Himalayas as his father did, but who instead faces the reality of a job at a trade company. Unhappy and consistently tripping himself up by his insistence on total honesty, he struggles with his fate, wondering if the ability to make choices is merely an illusion.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema: The Saragossa Manuscript (Poland/1964—directed by Wojciech Has)

Saturday, Nov. 29, 7 p.m.

This epic begins in 1739 as Alphonse van Worden crosses a mountain range said to be inhabited only by demons. Though he refuses to listen to such tales, his journey becomes a sequence of frightful, surreal and perhaps supernatural events.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema: Pharaoh (Poland/1965—directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz)
Sunday, Nov. 30, 1 p.m.

This uncut version of Kawalerowicz's epic centers on the young Egyptian ruler Ramses XIII, who, with his passions and idealism, has to face his country's external enemies and internal power struggles.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema: Mother Joan of the Angels (Poland/1960—directed by Jerzy Kawalerowicz)

Sunday, Nov. 30, 4:30 p.m.

Kawalerowicz received the Cannes Film Festival's Special Jury Prize for this tale of a virtuous young priest—and exorcist—who is assigned to investigate a case of demonic possession. This study of sin and redemption is set in a world that demands clear choices between good and evil—choices that are not as simple as they seem.

Masterpieces of Polish Cinema: Eroica (Poland/1957—directed by Andrzej Munk)
Sunday, Nov. 30, 7:00 p.m.

Putting a realist lens to a romantic ideal of heroism, Eroica's screenwriter, Jerzy Stawinski, draws upon his own experience in World War II. Imprisoned in a German camp, Stawinski escaped and participated in the Warsaw Uprising. Eroica transforms his experience into a dark tale of an average bon-vivant who, against his better judgment, joins the fight.

The King and the Mockingbird (France/1952/1980—directed by Paul Grimault)

Friday–Saturday, Dec. 19–20, 7 and 9 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 21, 2 and 4:30 p.m.

The legendary French animator Paul Grimault began a collaboration in 1948 with screenwriter Jacques Prévert on an animated adventure based on a story by Hans Christian Andersen. Unhappy with the production schedule, the producer seized control of the original footage and released a truncated version in 1950. Grimault spent decades retrieving the rights and raising funds to complete it. The result is an adventure for every age and a witty satire for grown-ups. In French with English subtitles. Tickets are $8.50 and $6.50 for DIA members, seniors and students.

FREE VINYL FRIDAY: Jessica Lea Mayfield - Founders - Sunday 9/28/14

Hey happy Friday to ya....we got our hands on a couple of sexy 7" vinyls from Jessica Lea Mayfield who is in town Sunday playing a FREE show over at Founders Taproom in Grand Rapids

email motorcityblog@earthlink.net for your chance to win some cool wax

Jessica Lea Mayfield To Release
"Standing In The Sun" 7"
This Fall

There's a chance Jessica Lea Mayfield may never have recorded her newest record, Make My Head Sing... if it wasn't for Satan.

"I bought this baritone guitar (her name is Barry) at the Guitar Emporium in Louisville, Kentucky, and it's this black glitter sparkle Gretsch," Jessica explained. "It's what got me into making another record and obsessed with playing ... I found that guitar and I was like, 'This is a sign from Satan to buy this guitar' and I started playing guitar more."

It is this same guitar that is featured in Jessica's new dark, confetti-filled video for "No Fun" (directed by Joshua Shoemaker) which you can watch courtesy of Stereogum HERE. The track will also be featured on Jessica's new "Standing in the Sun" 7", to be released this fall (art below).

Satan aside, Jessica Lea Mayfield's music has gained widespread acclaim for singing delicate confessions about love, heartbreak, and contradictory emotions in a way that captivates listeners and enchants critics. Whether she was heartbroken, or breaking hearts, Mayfield's acoustic strumming and laid back demeanor have remained consistent since her earliest recordings.

But on Make My Head Sing..., Jessica takes on distorted guitar tones, crashing drums, and heavy riffs that would more likely evoke a comparison to her idols of the early 90's, than any modern day artist. It finds Jessica in a place where she is ready to take control of her music, and elevate her reputation from folk songstress to rock star.

Evil Dead: The Musical is playing from October 1-25 at the City Theatre. Based on Sam Raimi’s 80’s cult classic films, Evil Dead: The Musical brings to life the familiar story of a boy and his friends who go on a weekend getaway to an abandoned cabin and then things go terribly awry.

Don’t Be a Monster is an anti-bullying program that began in 2012 and is a joint effort between haunted houses and non-profit organizations around the country. Erebus, a four-story haunted attraction in Pontiac, is a proud participant in the program as anti-bullying efforts are close to the heart of Ed Terebus, co-owner of Erebus.

The program seeks to educate youth about bullying, diversity and inclusiveness while empowering them to stand up for their peers and make positive choices for themselves. The national program will visit local middle schools in southeast Michigan in October during National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. The presentations include games and discussion.

“Studies show that 28 percent of students in grades 6-12 experience bullying and that 70.6 percent of young people say they have seen bullying in their schools,” said Jackie Buchanan, President and CEO at Genisys Credit Union. “We care about the youth in our community and want to help them understand how name calling, teasing, spreading rumors, leaving people out and other actions can hurt people. THIS THURS: Nerd Nite Detroit Back to School Special @ Tangent

Nerd Nite Detroit
Thursday, September 25, 2014
 @ 6.30pm

Tangent Gallery

Maybe you're headed back to school, maybe you're not. But join us anyway for a fun line-up of speakers along with our usual food and booze!

We're happy to introduce Bill Warters as a speaker. He'll be presenting a talk called "Working with and Learning From Conflict: Tales from the Field." Bill has been studying and intervening in and teaching about conflict all his adult life. In this presentation he will share a few illustrative and sometimes humorous stories from the field. Along the way we’ll review some key concepts related to conflict, community-building and the development of local cultures of dispute resolution. Bill will draw on his social ecology and urban ethnography and symbolic interactionist training to Nerd things up a bit.

Our second presenter is Cranbrook geologist John Zawiskie who will take us for an exploration of the major types of meteorites, what they tell us about the early history and origin of the solar system, and some effects of asteroid impacts on the Earth. Meteorites and impact glass from the Cranbrook Institute of Science collections will be on display and available for direct examination. An engaging activity meteorite or meteorwrong will allow us “nerds” to take a hand at identifying meteorites from unknown samples before and after the presentation.

The third speaker info is forthcoming. Keep your eyes open!
