The Deep End

May 9 – June 21, 2014  Opening Reception: Friday, May 9, 7-10 pm

The Deep End is an exhibition that presents work in various mediums centering on the physical, emotional and financial effects of mental illness and mental disease on individuals and society. The effects of mental health encompasses people from all walks of life, regardless of their cultural, social or economical background. The cultural biases, stigmas, and stereotypes associated with these topics can impact one's human rights and dignity. Many times, our understanding and comprehension of mental health is skewed, resulting in misdiagnosis and politically incorrect mockery. These topics have also been associated with recent tragic events and opinions about the pharmaceutical industry.

The Deep End is the 2014 Members' Choice Exhibition, as voted by the members of Whitdel Arts.

[WA] emergence gallery: Here / Not Here Works by Sophie Eisner

May 9 – June 21, 2014  Opening Reception: Friday, May 9, 7-10 pm

In Here/Not Here, Sophie Eisner explores how maps do more than facilitate navigation, they create context for experiences. Through a language of colors and lines, maps give a knowable quality to that which, in its entirety, can never be fully known. A map is a shorthand that gives us a way to understand the vastness and complexities of the landscape and situate ourselves within it. Through an understanding of place we develop an understanding of self. I know who I am because I know where I am; I know something happened because I know where it happened.

Every event must have a location and thus as we define landmarks in space, we also define landmarks in time. Eisner's two and three dimensional works investigate how we draw lines to define and understand space and how maps become thinking tools that help us bridge memory and experience, place and identity.

These exhibitions will run from May 9 - June 21, 2014. Events are free and open to the public. Open gallery hours are Saturdays during exhibitions, noon-3pm and by appointment.
