American electro house musician, Grammy nominated record producer and the founder of Dim Mak Records, STEVE AOKI, brought his “Aokify America Tour” traveling circus to
Detroit’s Fillmore on Wednesday Night with opening support from Borgore, Waka
Flocka Flame and Felix Cartel. The "Aokify Tour" serves as a showcase for the acts on
Aoki’s Dim Mak Records. The whole spectacle was full of collaborations among
the acts. Aoki brought out Borgore, Borgore brought out Waka Flocka, Aoki then brought out Waka Flocka and so on. Aoki is currently prepping his follow up to his
2012 album “Wonderland”, which is titled “Neon Future.”
Aoki has become known for throwing a full-blown party with
rafts going over the crowd, a dazzling light-show, smoke, champagne, confetti, cake, cake and more cake. Aoki’s Wednesday night set probably could have supplied
a cake shop with their monthly income. As many as 15 cakes were smashed on
attendees in the audience. Aoki started his show wearing a LED light vest while
playing in an illuminated orb shaped DJ Booth. After a song or two, the
Kyromen, a 10 foot shapeshifting, smoke shooting, LED immersed robot, took the
stage and amped up the evening. At about 20 minutes into his set, large image
projecting letters spelling AOKI descended from the ceiling on their way to the
stage.
In his 90 minute set, Aoki included his new collaboration with Afrojack
dubbed “Afroki”, as well as his recent track with Linkin Park, “A Light That
Never Comes”, and “Boneless”, his “Neon Future” collaboration with Chris Lake.
Highlights of Aoki’s set involved him separately bringing out opener’s Borgore
and Waka Flocka to perform their respective collaborations. His tracks “Beat
Down” with Angger Dimas and rapper Iggy Azalea also made it into the evenings
DJ set, as well as a reworking of "Zombie Nation" by Kernkraft 400.
Israeli Dubstep Producer, Borgore, may have had the most energetic
set of the night. His high energy dubstep and his live rapping/singing make his
live performance unique from others in the edm game. Borgore took the stage
with two quite attractive female’s gyrating and pole dancing on both sides of
the stage. The audience seemed to be attached to every beat that Borgore was
playing. While getting the stage ready for Aoki and all of the cake about to come our
way, Borgore played his biggest hits “Nympho” and “Decisions”(aka the “b*tches
love cake” song.) Borgore was the perfect lead in to Aoki’s set, a whole lot of
bass and a whole lot of party.
Rapper, Waka Flocka or Waka Flocka Flame, and EDM DJ Felix
Cartel opened the night’s festivities with rousing sets of party music for all
in attendance. One thing is for sure, after the success of this “Aokify” tour,
there is certainly going to be a second installment.
