FERNDALE PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES THE SPOKEN WORD

FERNDALE, MI – Once upon a time, the only way to learn a myth or enjoy a song was to have someone in your community convey it. This Monday, the Ferndale Public Library’s art exhibition, “The Power of Myth” creates a backdrop for live performances by our local talent, pairing art inspired by ancient myths and fables with music, poetry, folktales and urban legend.

Join us on Monday, October 21 at 7pm— for this free event, featuring Ferndale talent, including our library staff.  We’ll feature poetry by Sparrow, music and storytelling by Kathleen Hellenberg and an incredible local legend documented by the Ferndale Historical Society. Head Librarian of Youth Services Jillean McCommons will pick some old-time Appalachian tunes on the banjo  joined by Youth Services Assistant Jordan Wright (of local indie-rock quartet Due North).

These songs and tales demonstrate how the community performance is instrumental to our understanding of existence. Our knowledge of history, of the world, and of various cultures across continents is sculpted into stark relief by storytellers. How did we get here? We look to poets, scribes, singers and historians, (from Herodotus to Bob Dylan, from the Deuteronomy to Dickens,) to answers questions about our world, our daily existence, and to appreciate and enjoy life. The Ferndale Library celebrates stories on a daily basis. Our building is full of books, history and countless stories, but we’d like to share some of our own.

Books are fantastic, don’t get us wrong, but a story (or a song) can be so much more compelling when it’s performed. Come join us, hear some poetry and ponder the power and influence of the Storyteller in our society. Celebrate this tradition of sharing in the community the old stories and music. This special Art & Exhibitions event is free and open to the public.
