In late July, Justin Stein aka Elk completed what ultimately became the upcoming album 'Lets Get Married' after a somewhat dramatic turn of events. About halfway into the production of the album his computer broke down and a tough decision needed to be made; pay rent or buy a new computer.
A new computer was bought, and Justin left Brooklyn to retreat back to his parents house in Michigan to finish recording. He spent almost all his time in there, as much to finish the album as to avoid his mother with whom things had became tense. Justin's own room had been taken over by his grandmother, who had recently been diagnosed with Altzheimers and had moved in a few months prior. The end result is a literal example of a bedroom producer by necessity, with Elk mixingelectronic pop, Philip Glass samples, tropicalia, shoegaze, and flashes of the cerebral.
Lets Get Married will be released on February 15th, 2011 on Shape Up Records via cassette and digital download, with the vinyl release to follow in March. "Volleyball" is the first single from the record, which was featured on IMPOSE Magazine recently.
And to celebrate New York's recent round of blizzard level, hermit creating weather, Elk put together a mix he calls The "Snow Mixtape," which sounds like the audio equivalent of a snow day--indoors & forced to go through your record collection to kill time. It's an old school, selector style mix that features everyone from Ducktails, to Patti Labelle, from MGMT, to Thin Lizzy. Last year's Honey Range EP is still available from Elk's Bandcamp page as well.
Justin is also back in action and living in New York, too,
with a couple shows coming up, and even more on the way.

ELK. LIVE IN NEW YORK.
