WILD AT HEART

TICKET GIVEAWAY:
First person to respond to this POST VIA EMAIL will get a pair of tickets to see indie band Asobi Seksu (Japanese for casual sex) at the Pike Room on 3/05/09. They are supporting their new album “Hush” which I have been playing on my show.

I hope it is a good day for everyone out there. I started my new job today and it has been exciting, esp having been unemployed for the past year. It really feels good to start fresh and meeting new people (and getting back together with some old friends). For those out there that are still having difficulties on the job front, stay strong and don’t be afraid to seek out help if you need it. There are a number of agencies and groups that can offer support in the tough times. Also, if you get a job, make sure you show up on time and leave extra early that first day. I ended up getting caught for 20 minutes behind an auto accident so I was glad I left an hour early. Nothing makes a bad impression like being late your first day.

Saw the new film “Fanboys” which tells the story of four friends circa 1998 who are all Star Wars fans and counting down the days to the new Star Wars film, The Phantom Menace. One of the friends is suffering from cancer and wants to see the film before his death so they plot to break into Skywalker Ranch and steal an early print of the film. They drive across the country in their Millennium Falcon inspired van and encounter all kinds of obstacles from rabid Star Trek fans, a gay biker gangs and Las Vegas pimps. They also meet an array of guest stars including Carrie Fisher, Kevin Smith, Ray Park and a truly inspired William Shatner cameo which might make the film worth watching by himself. The four friends are OK in their roles but none of them really stand out in this film. Gal pal Kristen (Veronica Mars) Bell is also very pleasing on the eyes in this film and very sexy for the fanboy types (like me). While the film is one of the better
films of this type, I’m not sure it will translate to a more diverse audience but it should please most fans of Star Wars or sci-fi geeks. My grade is a B-.

My new Sat show (8-10AM on WXOU 88.3FM or online at www.wxou.org ) is going to be filled with a number of interviews which you can check out on my MySpace page – WWW.MYSPACE/wildatheart_13

One of them is Melinda Doolittle who has her first full length album, “Coming Back To You”, out in stores. She was in town on Sunday at Border’s performing a few tracks and I must say she does have a great voice (even better than that year’s winner Jordan Sparks who I wasn’t overly impressed with when I saw her). Melinda told me she started out tone deaf and had to work to get to where she was, eventually doing back-up vocals for Aaron Neville and CeCe Winans among others before a friend encouraged her to try out for American Idol. Now she can pick her own background singers, most of which were friends of hers. If you want to hear more about this, tune in Sat morning for the full interview. I’ll also be taking to a cast member of Fiddler On The Roof, local author/journalist Denise Crittendon about the state of Detroit and her new children’s self-help book and a cast member of the Ringwald’s new production, “The Bad Seed”. I might even play a few songs

I hate to say it, but not much stands out on the concert scene for me this week. The Claire Lynch Band will perform at the Ark in Ann Arbor on Friday. I found her voice stunning at the Folk Festival this year so if you missed that, you might want to check out her show. Saturday is the big day with the sold out Sam Roberts show at St Andrews (he is doing a River appearance at the Hard Rock CafĂ© earlier in the day which you can check out if you have the time), Ann Arbor electro-pop artists My Dear Disco will be at TNT’s Bar & Grill in Clinton TWP and Nickelback with Seether & Saving Abel are down at Joe Louis.

On Sunday, you can check out soul singer Clarence Carter, Bobby Blue Bland and R&B singer Latimore (best known for his hit "Let's Straighten It Out") at the Motor City Blues Festival at the Detroit Opera House.

Hope you have a good weekend and see you next week. - Wild Bill
